The 125th Mito Plum Blossom Festival will be held at Kairakuen Garden and Kodokan Mito Domain School between February 13th – March 21st 2021. Spring is the best time to experience Kairakuen Garden so make sure not to miss out!
Kairakuen Garden is home to 3000 plum trees of 100 different varieties. As different varieties of plum bloom at different times, the blossoms can be enjoyed over several weeks, just one of the great things about the festival.

At 300 hectares, Kairakuen Garden is 64 times the size of Tokyo Dome! It is also the world’s second largest park located in an urban area after New York’s Central Park.
Upon entering the park, a bamboo forest spreads out from the main gate, leading down to a natural spring. Located inside the park, Kobuntei Villa was designed by Nariaki Tokugawa, the 8th lord of the Mito Clan. Furthermore, the park’s Lake Senba is a popular place for local people to take a break and observe wildlife like water fowl.

・We ask you to cooperate with checking your temperature at the entrance and the ticket gate. Those who have a temperature of 37.5 degrees Celsius or higher will not be allowed to enter the park. Please refrain from visiting the park if you have any symptoms of a cold.

・Please register for ‘Amabie-chan’ which is operated by Ibaraki Prefecture Goverment.

teamLab: Digitized Kairakuen Garden
teamLab★”, an international art group consisting of specialists in various fields, will be staging the Mito Plum Blossom Festival this year. Based on the concept of “seeking a new relationship between humans and nature, and between ourselves and the world, how will they express Kairakuen Garden? You will be able to experience a beautiful imaginative world that you have never seen before.

Kodokan Night Plum Blossom Festival
This year’s event will be held for two days at the Kodokan in commemoration of its 180th anniversary.
The solemn and quiet atmosphere of the Kodokan, a university for the Bushido, is different from that of Kairakuen Garden, and changes the expression of the plum blossoms.
It is a very rare opportunity to view the plum blossoms at night.

Kairakuen Garden Fireworks
During the Plum Blossom Festival, fireworks will be launched every Saturday from 19:00 for a few minutes.

Plum Wine Sales and Tasting
100 different types of plum wine will be on sale, as well as taste testing of 10 carefully selected plum wines for 100 yen per glass!

48th Mount Tsukuba Plum Blossom Festival

Mount Tsukuba Plum Blossom Festival is located at an altitude of 250m offering panoramic views of nearby Tsukuba City, Tokyo Skytree and Mount Fuji in the distance. The combination of stunning views and more than 1000 plum trees blooming simultaneously is what makes the Mount Tsukuba Plum Blossom Festival really special. This year’s festival will be held between February 13th – March 21st 2021.

Mount Tsukuba Shrine is located on the slopes of the mountain, close to Miyawaki Cable Car Station. The shrine enshrines the God and Goddess of the mountain, a married couple known as Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto. The shrine is known throughout Japan for bringing good fortune to married couples and those looking for love.
Mount Nantai peak (871m) is most easily accessed by cable car from Miwayaki Cable Car Station while Mount Nyotai peak (877m) is best accessed by ropeway from Tsutsujigaoka Station.

Featuring a stunning location overlooking Kasumigaura, this secluded guest house was renovated in July 2020 to reflect the style of a traditional sake brewery built in 1900. There are three rooms that can sleep up to four people and can be rented out for private use. Breakfast is cooked in a kettle and fresh local produce is provided (Dinner is optional). You can rent a bicycle from the Kasumigaura City Communication Center. It is only a minute walk away from the “Tsukuba Kasumigaura Ring-Ring-Road” which has been designated as a National Cycle Route.

Isoyamatei Guesthouse
In Itako city, a city known for its water and scenic beauty, the old secluded house, Isoyamatei Guesthouse was opened in October 2019 and is a 120 year old private home. One of the most striking features is that the guesthouse is limited to just one group per day (maximum 10 people). The main room is 10 tatami mats(16.20㎡) and two other rooms are 8 tatami mats (12.96㎡). The rooms feature thick beams and detailed fixtures and fittings. A dining option is also available. You can enjoy the sights from a sightseeing boat navigating along the river during Itako Iris Festival in the early summer.

It is a pleasure to visit a place for the first time and to find a café with a great atmosphere, serving delicious coffee and sweets. We would like to introduce you to two cafés which are housed in historic and unique buildings. These cafes allow you can taste the owner’s carefully brewed coffee and home-made cakes.

Café Posten
The café is in a renovated building with a lovely triangular-shaped roof that was actually used as a post office from 1925 to 1962. According to the store’s website, the name Posten is the Swedish word for post office. You can enjoy self-roasted coffee, organic teas, local plates, seasonal cakes and other cakes at the cafe.

In 1950, the owner opened the restaurant and over time the restaurant grew in popularity as it became well known for it’s traditional Japanese food. Now, after three generations the family operates Miharu, which is a Japanese restaurant on the first floor and Cafe Miharu on the second floor. The homemade cakes are a real treat because they use seasonal fruits.

A French restaurant in the corner of Nomura Brewery, which has been around for 120 years. Recently renovated in 2017 because of the damage from the Great Kanto and Tohoku rains of 2015. Along with the original Japanese sake “Tsumugi Bijin” that became a symbol of Nomura Brewery’s recovery, we have gained a reputation as a restaurant where you can enjoy French cuisine with local products in a casual setting.

The wine dining room, which means “Time for Wine”, opened in 2018 inside Izumicho Kaikan, which was built in 1955. The unique curve of the building, the tiles near the entrance, the metal patterned letters on the building’s name, have given Izumicho Kaikan a retro-modern look that has been loved by many. To emphasize the atmosphere, the store has 20-30 different kinds of wines from Japan and around the world. The owner, a senior sommelier, will select a brand to suit your taste. The food menu is extensive and can be enjoyed with seasonal medicinal herbs.

Soba noodles are made by kneading together water and buckwheat flour, then stretching out a dough and cutting noodles. Buckwheat flour is made by removing the husk and grinding the kernels – this means that the higher the quality of the buckwheat, the better the flavour of the soba noodles.
Soba noodles are also a nutritious choice – as well as being easy to digest, they are high in protein and contain rutin, said to help with high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries.



소바는 메밀의 열매를 사용한 가루에 물을 넣어 치대어 반죽을 밀어 면으로 만든 것입니다. 메밀가루는 메밀의 열매와 껍질을 제거하여 종자의 배유 부분을 분말상태로 한 것입니다. 메밀의 열매가 좋을수록 더욱 좋은 풍미의 소바가 완성됩니다.

The best way to eat soba noodles made from Hitachi Aki Soba buckwheat flour is as ‘Kenchin Soba’, a local take on classic Japanese soba. In Kenchin Soba, soba noodles are served in or alongside a broth made using green onions, daikon radish, burdock root, konnyaku potato, carrots, shimeji mushrooms and dried taro stems and flavoured with soy sauce and mirin (sweet rice wine). This nourishing dish is packed with seasonal ingredients and the perfect comfort food for Autumn.
While Hitachi Aki Soba noodles can be eaten in lots of Tokyo restaurants, many people make their way to Ibaraki to try the noodles at their freshest. Autumn colours are at their best during the buckwheat harvest, making for the perfect combination of Fall foliage and freshly made soba.

One of the highlights of the year, Daigo Town Light Festival is back again for 2020. Glitter lights produce countless reflections as you walk through a tunnel to emerge in front of the otherworldly spectacle of Fukuroda Falls lit up in the Autumn night. The illuminations aren’t the only attraction – the Light Festival is also the perfect time to experience the Autumn colours around Fukuroda.

Take the JR Suigun Line to Fukuroda Station. From Fukuroda Station, take a bus bound for Fukuroda Falls. Ride the bus for around 10 minutes and get off at the last stop, Fukuroda Falls. The illuminations are 10 minutes walk from the bus stop.

JR水郡线「袋田站」搭乘开往袋田瀑布方向的巴士 约10分钟到终点「滝本」~步行10分钟


JR수이군선「후쿠로다역」에서 「후쿠로다 폭포행」버스로 약 10분. 종점「다키모토」~도보 10분

As a prefuture, Ibaraki is the number one chestnut producing prefecture in Japan. The chestnuts are large and have a strong aroma and taste. You can get chestnuts from September to the middle of October. During that time, you’ll be able to enjoy many different delicious chestnuts.



이바라키는 생산량 전국 1위를 자랑하는 현으로 가사마시, 가스미가우라시, 이시오카시 등이 대표적인 생산지로 알려져 있습니다. 알이 크고 향과 맛이 진한 것이 특징입니다. 밤을 수확하는 9월~10월 중순에는 밤을 사용한 맛있는 요리를 만나보실 수 있습니다.

They have a glossy surface, they’re fluffy and round. The chestnuts with a darker brown color are considered to be more delicious. Choose one that does not have any holes or bumps to ensure it’s fresh.



표면에 윤기가 있고 통통한 것. 껍질 부분의 갈색이 진한 것이 맛있는 밤이라고 전해집니다. 드리고 모양이 예쁘고 벌레 먹지 않은 것, 껍질이 검게 되지 않은 것을 고르세요.

Hạt dẻ ngon là loại hạt có bề mặt căng bóng và tròn trịa. Nhiều người cho rằng hạt dẻ có màu đậm sẽ ngon hơn là màu trà. Ngoài ra, những hạt dẻ có hình dáng đẹp, không bị sâu, không có lỗ và không bị thâm đen cũng là dấu hiệu của những hạt dẻ thơm ngon.

Chestnuts are not harvested, but are found. Chestnuts naturally fall from trees when they are ripe, so when they fall they are ready to be eaten. When picking them up, step on both sides of the bur and use your tongs to remove the chestnut to avoid being injured by the bur of the chestnut.



밤은 수확하는 것이 아니라 줍는 것이 기본입니다. 밤은 익으면 자연스레 나무에서 떨어져 떨어졌을 때가 알맞게 익은 상태입니다. 주울 때에는 밤송이 껍질 양쪽을 신발로 밟아 누르며 집게로 꺼내면 안전합니다.

การเก็บเกาลัด ไม่ใช่เป็นการเก็บจากต้น แต่เป็นการเก็บเกาลัดที่ร่วงอยู่ เมื่อเกาลัดสุกเต็มที่จะร่วงหล่นลงมาเองตามธรรมชาติ ดังนั้นจึงเหมาะจะรับประทานได้ทันที วิธีการเก็บคือ ใช้เท้าเหยียบที่เปลือกทั้ง 2 ด้าน ให้อ้าออกแล้วจึงใช้คีมคีบเมล็ดเกาลัดออกมา

Hạt dẻ không được hái, nhưng “nhặt hạt dẻ” là nguyên tắc cơ bản. Hạt dẻ rơi tự nhiên từ trên cây khi chúng đã chín, vì vậy khi chúng rụng có nghĩa là chúng đã sẵn sàng để ăn. Khi nhặt, nên mang giày và dùng cây kẹp để lấy hạt.

If you store it in the refrigerator, put it in a plastic bag to prevent it from drying, and it will be okay for 3 to 4 months. When chestnuts are cooled, the starch changes to sugar. It’s better to store them in the refrigerator for about a month to keep them in a raw state for increasing their sweetness and make them even more delicious. Eating the bitter skin of the chestnut with rice is popular, but it is also recommended that you eat the skin with tempura as it’s surprisingly delicious.



냉장고에 보관할 경우에는 밤이 마르지 않도록 비닐봉지에 넣어서 보관하면 3~4개월 간은 드실 수 있습니다. 또한 밤은 온도가 낮아지면 전부이 당으로 바뀌기 때문에 가열하지 않은 상태로 냉장고에서 1개월 정도 보관하면 단맛이 증가되어 한층 더 맛있게 드실 수 있습니다. 밤조림, 밤밥, 밤조림을 튀겨 튀김으로 즐겨보세요.

The chestnuts are harvested from one of the oldest chestnut fields in the prefecture. The Iwane is aged in the refrigerator to make it taste excellent.

If you leave the persimmon as it is, it will become soft in a few days. To preserve the crispy texture of persimmon, apply a tissue soaked in water to the top part of the persimmon above the leaves and put it in a plastic bag with the tissue on the bottom. The persimmon will be upside down. Then put it in the refrigerator. In this way, you can keep it crunchy for 2 to 3 weeks before eating.

Most of the apples cultivated in Ibaraki prefecture are produced in the cool climate of the mountains around Daigo Town. The apples are sold mostly to consumers at the orchards. How to identify delicious apples

For red apples, the ones that are completely red from the top to the bottom are ripe. The apples with red on the side and green on the top and bottom are not ripe yet and many of them will taste sour. For green apples, it’s best to choose the apples that have no uneven color. The stem of the apple should be firm. Apples that grow on thick branches are high in sugar content. Apples that grow on thin, wispy branches are more likely to not have received the same amount of nutrients as the apples that grew on the thick branches.


紅蘋果熟透時會整顆顏色鮮紅,若是半紅半綠則代表還沒熟透,容易味道偏酸; 而成熟的青蘋果則是顏色均勻。新鮮的蘋果其蒂頭還帶有水分且保有彈性,若是蒂頭乾枯則可能已經不新鮮。另外,蒂頭較粗的蘋果代表吸收了較多了養分,所以糖分甜度也較高。

빨갛게 익는 품종의 사과일 경우 사과 바닥 부분까지 빨갛게 된 것이 잘 익은 사과입니다. 꼭지 부분과 가까운 윗부분이 빨갛고 밑부분이 연두색인 사과는 덜 익은 사과로 대부분 산미가 강합니다. 꼭지 부분이 마르지 않고 탄력이 있는 것이 신선한 사과입니다. 반대로 꼭지가 시들어 있는 사과는 선도가 떨어진 것일 경우가 많습니다. 그리고 꼭지가 두꺼운 것일수록 충분한 영양분을 받아 성장했다는 증거로 당분이 높고 맛있습니다.
