Hobikisen – traditional fishing boats (Lake Kasumigaura area)
‘Hobikisen’ are traditional wooden fishing boats used on Ibaraki’s Lake Kasumigaura, the second largest lake in Japan. With billowing white sails, these boats evoke a Japan of days gone by.
During the warmer months, visitors to the area can take a cruise on the lake to observe these traditional fishing boats at work.
Three municipalities in the Lake Kasumigaura area offer these sightseeing boat trips – Kasumigaura City, Tsuchiura City and Namegata City.
