The wine dining room, which means “Time for Wine”, opened in 2018 inside Izumicho Kaikan, which was built in 1955. The unique curve of the building, the tiles near the entrance, the metal patterned letters on the building’s name, have given Izumicho Kaikan a retro-modern look that has been loved by many. To emphasize the atmosphere, the store has 20-30 different kinds of wines from Japan and around the world. The owner, a senior sommelier, will select a brand to suit your taste. The food menu is extensive and can be enjoyed with seasonal medicinal herbs.

Halal literally means ‘permissible’ in Arabic and refers to food which adheres to Islamic Law. Halal food includes dairy products, fish, grains, vegetables as well beef and chicken that has been slaughtered in accordance with Islamic Law.

Tìm hiểu về Soba?

Soba noodles are made by kneading together water and buckwheat flour, then stretching out a dough and cutting noodles. Buckwheat flour is made by removing the husk and grinding the kernels – this means that the higher the quality of the buckwheat, the better the flavour of the soba noodles.
Soba noodles are also a nutritious choice – as well as being easy to digest, they are high in protein and contain rutin, said to help with high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries.

Kenchi soba – Món ăn đặc trưng của Ibaraki!

The best way to eat soba noodles made from Hitachi Aki Soba buckwheat flour is as ‘Kenchin Soba’, a local take on classic Japanese soba. In Kenchin Soba, soba noodles are served in or alongside a broth made using green onions, daikon radish, burdock root, konnyaku potato, carrots, shimeji mushrooms and dried taro stems and flavoured with soy sauce and mirin (sweet rice wine). This nourishing dish is packed with seasonal ingredients and the perfect comfort food for Autumn.
While Hitachi Aki Soba noodles can be eaten in lots of Tokyo restaurants, many people make their way to Ibaraki to try the noodles at their freshest. Autumn colours are at their best during the buckwheat harvest, making for the perfect combination of Fall foliage and freshly made soba.

2020 has been a difficult year for everyone. We would like to thank all of you who have been following Instagram, Facebook and the IBARAKI GUIDE website. We hope that 2021 will bring you a peaceful and safe world, and we look forward to sharing more wonderful things about Ibaraki with you in 2021.
During the New Year’s holiday of 2021, we ask everyone to take thorough measures to prevent COVID-19 infections and follow the Ibaraki Prefecture Guidelines. Here, we would like to briefly introduce you to some shrines and temples.

New Year’s Holiday

On New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in Japan, many people go to shrines and temples. Some people even spend the countdown at shrines and temples. At midnight on New Year’s Eve, the “New Year’s Eve Bell” rings 108 times after midnight at temples. It is said to remove the 108 vexations (the actions of the mind that confuse, trouble, and torment people). Then there is Hatsumode, the first visit to a shrine or temple after the new year. This is an event to give thanks for the past year and to pray to the gods of the shrines and temples for a good new year. In Ibaraki Prefecture, there are many shrines and temples in each region, and the shrines introduced below are typical ones to visit for Hatsumode. On this day, you can buy omikuji (fortune telling) for the year ahead, as well as amulets, demon arrows, rakes, maneki neko (waving cat), daruma (doll), and ofuda (talisman) according to your wishes. In the cold season, most temples and shrines serve sweet sake made from rice to warm up the body.

Known as ‘Hatsuhi no De’, sunrise on January 1st marks the beginning of the New Year. On this day of celebration, people pray to the rising sun to ask the Gods for happiness and productivity for the year to come. Kamiiso no Torii Shrine Gate is located just off the coast below Oarai Isosaki Shrine and is believed to be where the Gods enshrined at Isosaki first appeared. On New Year’s Day, the sun rises directly between the pillars of the Shrine Gate in a once-a-year spectacle that attracts crowds every year.

Kasamainari

Đền Kasama Inari

Built in 651, Kasama Inari is one of Japan’s three great Inari Shrines. Large crowds spend the night inside the shrine grounds to welcome the first sunrise of the new year – around 810,000 people visit over the first three days of the new year. Kasama Inari enshrines the God ‘Ukanomitma’, the guardian deity of industry and god of fire prevention. Many visitors to the shrine pray twice, once on the evening of the 31st to pray for the departing year, and again after midnight to pray for the coming year. The area in front of the shrine fills with street food to cater to all the visitors spending the night. The festival is usually crowded with worshippers throughout the night with the many street food vendors, but unfortunately there will be no street food this year.

Life in Ibaraki 『Refresh your spirit and body with autumn fruits』

Cuộc sống ở Ibaraki – “trái cây mùa thu mang lại cảm giác dễ chịu, sảng khoái”

It still feels like it’s the middle of summer, but at the same time looking at the calendar tells us that autumn is right around the corner. This is the time of year to experience the best of the autumn fruits, which are the Japanese pears and grapes. Ibaraki prefecture boasts one of best domestic Japanese pear and grape harvests in Japan. We would like to introduce you all to the best attractions autumn has to offer in Ibaraki.

Find relief from the summer heat by consuming amino acids from the Japanese pear. The ”Keisui” pear, native to Ibaraki, is recommended.

Speaking of Japanese pears, they are characteristic with really juicy and crunchy in texture. A pear is a fruit that contains an abundant amount of nutrition, although 90% of the contents in a pear is made up of water. It’s wildly known that they contain a rich amount of ”aspartic acid”, which is helpful when recovering from exhaustion, especially in the summer months. They also contain ”potassium”, which helps to cleanse salt from the body.

The melon is the most famous and commonly talked about fruit from Ibaraki. It’s also the most produced fruit in Ibaraki. However the amount of Japanese pears produced is the second largest in Japan. Various types of pears are grown in many different parts of Ibaraki prefecture and they’re harvested from the beginning of August to the end of October each year.

For example, at Hiyama fruit farm, which is a farm that craters to domestic and international tourists, has been operating for three generations in Hitachiota City in northern Ibaraki prefecture. They harvest different varieties of pears. The varieties includes “Sosui”, “Natsushizuku”, “Kosui”, “Hosui,” “Keisui,” and “Syugyoku” from the middle of August to the end of October.

Among them, “Keisui” is an original variety of Ibaraki prefecture, and is a product that the prefecture took time to develop and complete. This large pear, weighing over 600g each, is characterized by plenty of fruit juice and abundant sweetness.

The harvest period starts at the beginning of September and takes about one month. The Keisui can be stored and refrigerated for about three months after harvest, allowing for a longer shelf life. Currently research is underway to expand the shelf life, allowing for the Keisui to be shipped domestically and internationally.

It’s also recommended as a gift because of its attractive appearance and taste.

A grape is a fruit that helps you recover from fatigue in the summer. Grapes contain a large amount of natural sugar such as “glucose” and “fructose”. These are easily absorbed into the body and give great nutritional benefits.

Many different types of grapes are grown in Ibaraki prefecture. The variety is an abundant, and the grape vineyards that are inside of green houses open in July for people to experience grape harvesting. The outdoor grape vineyards open from the end of August. The harvest continues until the beginning of October.

‘Kyoho” is known as the “King of grapes”, with its large size and sweetness, it’s always popular. It is grown in Ibaraki.

“Shine Muscat”, which has become increasingly popular in recent years, is one variety that is large and green. This grape is seedless, has thin skin, and there is no bitterness. The most attractive part is that peeling the skin is not required before consumption.

Another recommendation is the Hitachi Seiryu, a regional limited variety that is grown only in Hitachiota city in northern Ibaraki. This large grape with a beautiful yellowish green color is said to be a mutant strain that was born in 1978 from a natural crossover of Kyoho. The seedlings were carefully cultivated from the trees and fruit and growth characteristics were investigated. This variety was registered as “Hitachi Seiryu” in March 2004, 26 years after their creation.

In addition to the grain size and rich sweetness derived from “Kyoho”, it has a little bit of acid and bitterness, however it’s still considered sweet. They’re loved by people of all ages. The amount produced was small and distribution was limited until now. This has changed in recent years, as the number of cultivating farmers has increased, and it is more likely that branding and distribution will further advance in the future.

The Mutoh Tourism Farm in Hitachiota city, which has been cultivating grapes for 60 years over three generations, collects and sells this Hitachi Seiryu from the middle of July to the end of September. In addition, they produce about 15 varieties of grapes annually, such as “Kyoho” that is harvested at the same time as Hitachi Seiryu, “Shine Muscat”, “Violet King”, “Queen Nina” that are harvested in August, grapes are grown and sold year around.

In Ibaraki Prefecture, there are many tourist farms where you can enjoy picking fruit, including the Hiyama Fruit Farm and Mutoh Tourist Farm mentioned above. The harvested pears are able to be peeled and sampled using a wooden knife prepared by the farm. The pears are able to be easily picked and peeled with a wooden knife because the skin is soft. As a side note, it seems that the pears with the same skin color are evenly exposed to the sun, allowing them to be more delicious.

The beauty of grape picking lies in its beautiful environment. Countless bunches of grapes are hanging from green vines. The grapes are carefully wrapped to avoid damage from the rain. Only grapes that have already been covered by the producer are allowed to be picked.

Nghệ thuật múa truyền thống của thành phố Ryugasaki

This event is the climax of the three-day Yasaka Shrine Gion Festival held in late July. During the event, maiotokomale acrobats wearing frog masks climb a 14m tall pole accompanied by tradtional music. At the top of the pole, the maiotoko shoot arrows in each of the four cardinal directions and perform feats of acrobatics on their hands. This festival is designated as a nationally-selected and Ibaraki Prefectural ‘important intangible folk-cultural property’.

Shimodate Gion Matsuri

Lễ hội Shimodate Gion

The main event of this 123 year-old festival is the omikoshi, a kind of portable shrine used to transport the god during a festival. Shimodate Gion Festival is famous for featuring Japan’s heaviest portable shrine, the Heisei-mikoshi (during the first three days of the festival). The large omikoshicarried by local men and the women’s omikoshiare also a sight not to be missed! On the final day of the festival, the omikoshi is carried into the river in an other-worldly spectacle.

Shimodate Gion Matsuri

Ushiku Kappa Matsuri Festival

Ushiku Kappa Matsuri

Lễ hội Ushiku Kappa

First held in 1981, the ‘Kappa Dance Parade’ featuring more than 10,000 dancers is the highlight of this festival. A kappa is yokai or imp in Japanese folklore. Kappa look like a mix between a human, frog and turtle and live in rivers. As well as performances and dances, local organisations also carry omikoshiportable shrines through the city. Best of all, the festival is free for anyone to join in so make sure you’re ready to dance!

Iwai Masakado Matsuri

Lễ hội Iwai Masakado Matsuri lần

This festival started in 1972 to celebrate local hero Taira no Masakado, a samurai and powerful land owner in the 10th century. The festival begins with a lively parade at midday followed by the unmissable shutsujin-shiki, a reenactment of samurai departing for the front in which more than 100 samurai march down Iwai Shopping Street. If watching the parade isn’t enough, the festival also allows up to 20 people to become a samurai for the day and join the parade (application required in advance). The festival culminates in the departure of the samurai on horseback, performed by experts from Fukushima Prefecture Horseback Samurai Association. Make sure to put this festival on your Autumn bucket-list!
